Not that originals are bad, but a cover song can give a fresh take on an older classic or perhaps a lesser-known song.
Anyways, I was just thinking since I was listening to these today and it made me think of covers:
EDIT: HammerheadFistpunch has kindly pointed out that offering a music opinion with no music is kind of a dick move. Also, Kinja ate my second album picture for some reason. As a result, here’s what I’m talking about:
Here’s Heart Full of Soul by The Yardbirds:
Then, here’s the cover which I think is superior:
Here’s Renegades of Funk (which I actually didn’t know was a cover until a month ago), by Soul Sonic Force:
Here’s it done by Rage Against the Machine (which I also prefer):
EDIT 2: FUCK KINJA

Yeah, if given a choice between a straight cover and someone who does something interesting with it, I’ll take the interesting cover. Paul Anka’s Rock Swings and Shatner’s Seeking Major Tom are in my regular rotation, along with Me First & Gimme Gimme’s Take a Break , Type O Negative’s covers of Summer Breeze, Light My Fire, and their Beatles medley, and Biz Markie’s Benny and the Jets, among others.
I also have a whole separate playlist of just Pink Floyd covers....

Our national public service radio network includes a youth station called JJJ (Triple J). Every Friday morning for well over a decade there has been a segment called Like A Version. Local and international acts come in and do an original and a cover. Many compilation CDs have been created as a result with more than a few covers going on to be minor hits.

This reminds me when Peter Gabriel released an album of covers called Scratch My Back, and there was supposed to be a companion album called And I’ll Scatch Yours. The idea being he’d do covers, and the artists whose music he covered would reciprocate. Several of the artists didn’t like his version of their songs and backed up. I really do like Gabriel’s version of Heroes, although Bowie didn’t.
